Cherries with Pitcher and Cup

Oil on linen 12" x 16"          © Jane Hurd 2010
My friend found this beautiful, delicate little pitcher for me at the Salvation Army. The cup is more of my grandmother's "depression ware" pattern that I found on eBay. This pattern is Lu-Ray Pastels. (My collection of her dishes was missing cups and saucers.)  Painting memories of my grandmother and my childhood makes me happy.

Three Cherries #2

Cherries are my favorite fruit. So delicious and great painting subjects.

This persimmon is, unfortunately, now over ripe for painting. It was a beauty.

One of a pair of my father's brass swans. I love its gesture.

My grandmother's cream pitcher again. It always looks good with grapes.

Prospect Park Lake

Oil on linen  14" x 18"
A lovely scene near the skating rink. Plein air painting.

Dune Road

Oil on canvas  18" x 14"
The road between dunes where vehicles access the beach on Fire Island. Plein air painting.

Maroon Cup with Apple and Three Rocks

Three Apples in a Bowl

I am starting to like my still life paintings better than my landscapes, although I do prefer painting outside. Still life set ups are contained and delineated. Nature scenes are more diffuse and therefore harder to interpret many times.

Mama's Pitcher

Oil on linen 8" x 10"
My grandmother's cream pitcher evokes such strong memories of the best of my childhood - summers spent in Brady, Texas. I like this painting, except I question the yellow shadow color. I find it very difficult to create yellow in shadow. It always seems muddy brown. Any secrets welcome.

Orange and Lemon with Basket

Oil on linen 9" x 12"
I like the composition and colors. Also, I like the bold brush strokes. Notice a huge lemon and a very small orange.

Basket Flowers

Oil on paper 12" x 9"
Dried flowers found in countyside in Provence. So delicate and sweet. A pale peachy pink.

Pink Pot with Shell and Box

Oil on paper 9" x 12"
A pink pot that Heather left behind, a satin box given to me by Auntie Vernor and a shell from the beach at St. Croix.
